China Joins WIPO Internet Treaties

The decision to join the WIPO Copyright Treaty and WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty (i.e. ‘WIPO Internet Treaties’) took effective in China on June 9, 2007, which was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress at the end of last year. After June 9, without permission of Internet authors, actors and records and video tapes copyright owners, any person who uses the works in the internet shall be liable for the infringement.

“To join the two treaties will benefit us in enhancing the cooperation between our country and the international community in the field of intellectual property right protection and learning the successful experience on the internet copyright protection in the international community, improving the Chinese copyright law, and increasing the level of the internet copyright protection in our country, as well as impelling the quick development of the internet industry in our country.” said Long Xinmin, ex-director of the State Copyright Bureau.
